“Leading the University’s Social Council gives me the opportunity to give something back to Cádiz” 18 May 2026
Fede Linares, President of the University Social Council, advocates for a university closely connected to the real needs of the province
“The mission of the University does not end in the classroom or the laboratory; it is fulfilled when knowledge is transformed into tangible solutions to the challenges of our time.” This statement, made by Fede Linares, President of the University of Cádiz Social Council, encapsulates the core purpose of this governing body. Yet there is another way to understand that mission: through the Social Engagement Awards, which celebrated their tenth edition this year. These awards naturally bring together commitment to disadvantaged communities, research excellence and even the lively traditions of the university tuna music groups. Throughout this interview, Fede Linares explains how these close connections between society and the University are built and reflects on the challenges the UCA faces in bringing knowledge beyond classrooms and laboratories into workplaces, neighbourhoods and homes across the province.
This week marked the presentation of the 10th Social Engagement Awards. How was the event and what do these awards represent for the Social Council?
The awards ceremony is always a very special occasion, as it allows us to recognise the exceptional commitment of individuals and organisations to our community. This year’s event was particularly meaningful, both because of the significance of reaching the tenth edition and because of the remarkable human quality and talent of the award recipients. They all embody a courageous and genuine commitment to social development from very different fields such as business, research, culture and social action.
In this regard, I would once again like to congratulate Sociedad Cooperativa Andaluza Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Business Institution Award), Alexis Morante (Alumni Award), María Rosa Durán (Research Award), the Social Sciences and Communication Tuna Group from Jerez (Alumni Award), and my dear Fundación Alalá (Social Institution Award), where I have the honour of serving as vice-president and trustee. I would also like to thank everyone who joined us on such a special occasion for all of us who are part of the Social Council of the University of Cádiz, as well as all those involved in organising the awards, who once again did an extraordinary job.
What are the functions of the University of Cádiz Social Council and what role does it play within the University’s governance structure?
The University of Cádiz Social Council is the governing body through which society participates in the University. It acts as an essential strategic bridge between academic excellence and the needs of the socio-economic environment. Within the University’s governance structure, its role is fundamental in ensuring that the University does not become isolated, but instead acts as a driver of progress for Cádiz through financial oversight and the transfer of knowledge to both public institutions and the business sector.
Its functions are structured around three main areas. From an economic perspective, it oversees financial activity, approves annual budgets and promotes social collaboration. Academically, it ensures that academic programmes respond to social needs. In terms of its relationship with society, it participates in strategic planning, manages scholarship and recognition programmes for social engagement and teaching innovation, approves academic regulations and fosters key partnerships benefiting graduates.
