INDESS hosts the 1st Research Seminar ‘Between Atlantic Wines. Jerez and Oporto in Perspective’

The meeting has brought together specialists to analyse the history, culture and international projection of these two leading wine-producing regions

The Institute for Research in Social Sustainable Development (INDESS) of the University of Cádiz has hosted the 1st Research Seminar Between Atlantic Wines. Jerez and Oporto in Perspective, an academic meeting that has brought together specialists from different disciplines to analyse, from a comparative perspective, the history, culture and international projection of two leading wine-producing regions: Jerez and Oporto.

The opening session has been attended by Javier Álvarez, director of INDESS; Antonio Rafael Peña, rector’s delegate at the Jerez Campus; César Saldaña, president of the Regulatory Council of the Designations of Origin Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda; and José Antonio López, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication.

Throughout the day, an interdisciplinary scientific programme has been developed, featuring researchers and specialists of recognised prestige. Among them, Carla Sequeira, researcher at the University of Porto; Javier Maldonado Rosso, specialist in wine history linked to the University of Cádiz; José Manuel Aladro Prieto, senior lecturer at the University of Seville; and María Murillo Romero, researcher in heritage and cultural landscapes.

Experts from various academic and professional fields have also taken part, including Ana Ruiz Rodríguez, senior lecturer at the University of Cádiz and researcher at the Institute of Viticulture and Agri-Food Research (IVAGRO); Serafín Cruces Montes, professor at the University of Cádiz and director of the Caja Rural del Sur Chair in Wine, Society and Sustainability; and José Miguel Mota Macías, professor at the University of Cádiz in the field of computer engineering and member of the same chair.

The programme has been complemented by contributions from professionals and specialists in the wine and cultural sectors, such as Jesús Anguita Duarte, manager of the González Byass Foundation and director of its historical archive; José Luis Jiménez García, member of the Royal Academy of San Dionisio; Paco Odero Álvarez, collector and researcher of historical wine labels; José Luis Baños Ramírez, manager of the Wine and Brandy Route of the Marco de Jerez; and Pilar García Martínez, head of international markets at Grupo Estévez.

The seminar, held in the INDESS assembly hall, has served as a space for interdisciplinary scientific exchange focused on wine heritage, addressing historical, architectural, social, economic and cultural aspects linked to both Atlantic contexts.

The organisation, coordinated by INDESS researcher Maribel Serrano Macías, has expressed special thanks to the speakers for their commitment from the outset, their excellent collaboration and their interest in building this scientific meeting. Likewise, recognition has been given to the support of sponsoring and collaborating entities, including the Caja Rural del Sur Chair in Wine, Society and Sustainability of the University of Cádiz, the CATAR project, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication, Grupo Estévez-Valdespino, the Institute of Viticulture and Agri-Food Research (IVAGRO) and INDESS itself. Appreciation has also been extended to all attendees for contributing to the academic and social projection of the event.

With this initiative, INDESS has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting interdisciplinary research, enhancing wine heritage and generating spaces for scientific dialogue that contribute to knowledge and the sustainable development of territories.
