University of Cádiz to Host Annual Meeting of the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists (AMIT)

The event, to be held on March 13 at the Constitución 1812 Building, will feature lectures, workshops, documentary screenings and the presentation of the Antonia Monreal Award

The University of Cádiz will host the annual meeting and assembly of the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists (AMIT) in Andalusia on Friday, March 13. The event will bring together researchers, technologists and students to reflect on the role of women in science, promote scientific vocations and highlight female role models in academia.

The event will take place in the Argüelles Hall of the Constitución 1812 Building and will feature a programme combining science outreach, training activities and recognition of female research talent.

The day will begin with an institutional welcome session attended by the Rector of the University of Cádiz, Casimiro Mantell, the UCA Director General for Equality, Paqui Bernal, and the President of AMIT Andalusia, Susana Gaytán.

One of the central moments of the event will be the opening lecture, “Algorithms that Save Lives,” delivered by Dr Ana del Rosario Niño, professor at the University of Cádiz. During her talk, she will present the Recaída 0 project, an initiative that applies mathematical tools and algorithms to improve the treatment and monitoring of childhood leukaemia.

The programme also includes a workshop on COARA research and narrative CVs, led by Teresa Suárez (OneToCorp), which will explore new approaches to evaluating research careers by focusing on scientific trajectories beyond traditional metrics.

The event will also feature the presentation and screening of the documentary “Mujeres a conciencia” (Women with Science), introduced by Dr Hortensia Morón from the Department of Didactics of Experimental and Social Sciences at the University of Seville. This activity aims to encourage scientific vocations among girls and young women by showcasing women working in science.

Recognition and commitment to equality

During the event, a particularly meaningful moment will be the tribute to a young researcher from Afghanistan, as part of the campaign launched by AMIT in 2021 to support girls and women in the country and help guarantee their access to education and scientific research.

The programme will also include the presentation of the Antonia Monreal Award, which recognises students in the field of Education Sciences. This year’s award will be presented to María de la Cruz Valle, a student in the Master’s Degree in Inclusive Education at the University of Córdoba.

In the afternoon, AMIT members will hold their ordinary and extraordinary assembly, where the association’s main lines of work will be discussed and the new board of AMIT Andalusia will be elected.
