The University of Cádiz consolidates its position in the Shanghai Ranking, maintaining four subject areas among the world’s top 500

UCA achieves three consecutive appearances among the international academic elite and once again stands out in Oceanography, ranked among the world’s top 200 universities

The University of Cádiz continues to strengthen its international presence in the 2025 edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), part of the prestigious Shanghai Ranking, maintaining four subject areas among the world’s top 500. According to the latest update, recently released, the institution remains part of this select group, reinforcing its upward trajectory in research and knowledge transfer.

Oceanography is once again confirmed as one of UCA’s leading scientific disciplines at the international level. In the 2025 edition, the University of Cádiz remains in the 151–200 band globally, placing it among the top positions within the Spanish university system for this field and consolidating its status as a key player in marine and ocean studies.

Alongside Oceanography, UCA also appears in the GRAS ranking for Ecology, Mathematics, and Agricultural Sciences, all of which are listed within the top 500 worldwide. Ecology holds its place in the 301–400 band, while Mathematics and Agricultural Sciences both appear in the 401–500 range. These results confirm the diversity and strength of UCA’s research structure in strategic areas ranging from fundamental sciences to sustainable agri-food production.

These results mark the continuation of a very positive trend over recent years. In 2023, UCA ranked among the 100–150 best universities in the world for Oceanography, 201–300 in Mathematics, 301–400 in Ecology, and 401–500 in Environmental Science and Engineering. One year later, in 2024, the ranking once again acknowledged UCA’s scientific potential, keeping it in the 100–150 group for Oceanography and expanding its presence by including Education and Agricultural Sciences among the 401–500 best institutions globally.

It is also worth noting that these strong subject-specific rankings add to UCA’s consistent presence in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) — the global list of the Shanghai Ranking — where the University of Cádiz has appeared uninterruptedly in the 901–1000 band worldwide in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 editions. This places UCA among a select group of universities that consistently meet the demanding criteria of scientific excellence assessed by this global classification.

About the Shanghai Ranking

The Shanghai Ranking by subject is based on objective indicators such as the number of publications indexed in Web of Science and InCites, normalised citation impact, the proportion of articles published in first-quartile journals, international collaboration, and researcher awards. The position achieved by the University of Cádiz reflects the work carried out by its 2,200+ researchers across more than 210 research groups, as well as the institution’s strategic commitment to key areas such as marine sciences, environment, applied mathematics, and agri-food innovation.

With these results, UCA reaffirms its position as a scientific benchmark in Southern Europe and as a leading university in marine and coastal research, while also continuing to strengthen its presence in other academic fields.
