The University of Cádiz celebrates the Week of Science and Technology with activities across its four campuses

UCA researchers bring science closer to students and the public through workshops, exhibitions, science cafés, and specialized training

The University of Cádiz (UCA) is celebrating a new edition of the Week of Science and Technology, an initiative involving the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy, and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i), in collaboration with the Descubre Foundation – Ministry of University, Research and Innovation – and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities – and the SEA-EU Alliance.

Throughout the month of November, the different university campuses will host activities aimed at all audiences, especially secondary school and high school students, with the goal of promoting scientific culture through participatory, creative, and innovative formats.

The program includes the Week of Science and Technology at the Faculty of Science, which will take place from November 4 to 15 at the Puerto Real Campus. This program offers workshops, experiments, demonstrations, and outreach talks conducted by UCA research staff, mainly aimed at secondary and high school students.

Likewise, on November 10 and 11, the UCC+i will host 39 Science Cafés at the Constitution Building 1812 in Cádiz. These meetings, organized in collaboration with the Descubre Foundation, FECYT – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities – and the SEA-EU Alliance, create a space for dialogue between researchers from the four campuses and participating audiences, addressing current scientific topics from environmental, health, technological, humanistic, and social perspectives.

In addition, throughout November, two exhibitions can be visited at the Faculty of Science: Comic Science and Ginna en el campo. The first, coordinated by Professor Fini Sánchez García (Department of Chemical Engineering and Food Technology), merges art and science through comics and includes information about the different degrees taught at the Faculty. The second, organized by the GINNA project of the ELECMI Network, explores the role of nanoscience and nanotechnology in everyday life.

On November 13, the Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy (Jerez Teaching Extension) will host the workshops Health and Care: A Special Look at Early Childhood Education, coordinated by Professor Lorena Tarriño, with the participation of researchers Blanca María Lozano, Celia Cruz, and Antonio Ribelles. These sessions will introduce basic concepts of health and first aid through practical, age-appropriate activities for preschool students.

Finally, on November 14, the UCA-SEA Building at the Port of Algeciras will host the course Communicating Science Today: From Algeciras to Society, part of the 28th Algeciras Autumn Courses, organized by the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability and Culture of the UCA and the City Council of Algeciras, with the collaboration of the Vice-Rectorate of the Algeciras Bay Campus and the UCC+i. This event aims to reflect on the new challenges of science communication and strategies to strengthen the link between the university and society.

The course program will feature lectures by specialists in science journalism, institutional communication, social media, and classroom or laboratory outreach, as well as round tables on outreach experiences at UCA and practical workshops on designing scientific culture projects.

The course is open to the general public, research and teaching staff, university students, and communication professionals interested in improving their skills in science dissemination. Registration is available through the CELAMA platform at: https://celama.uca.es/28COA/E03/
