The UCA, recognised in the Andalusian Urban Planning Awards granted by the Regional Government of Andalusia

The University, together with the College of Architects, recognised in the Research category for its ‘Urban and Territorial Planning Manuals’

The University of Cádiz has received a special mention in the sixth edition of the Andalusian Urban Planning Awards, granted by the Regional Ministry of Development, Territorial Planning and Housing of the Government of Andalusia. This recognition, in the Research category, highlights the informative and educational value of the Technical Manuals of Urban and Territorial Planning, a collection developed by the Official College of Architects of Cádiz and the University of Cádiz.

These awards honour good practices and contributions to sustainable urban and territorial development in Andalusia. In this edition, the jury especially valued the manuals’ ability to transfer academic and technical knowledge into the professional sphere, as well as their usefulness as educational materials in various schools of architecture across the country.

The recognised collection comprises four publications that systematise the experience of Andalusian urban planning professionals in areas such as intermediate-scale urban projects, city planning, mosaic-territorial city planning, and intervention in historic centres. Each volume addresses key aspects of planning, such as partial plans, general plans, subregional territorial planning, and special plans.

Coordinated by architects and professors at the School of Architecture of Seville, Pedro Górgolas and Victoriano Sainz, the work was developed between 2020 and 2024 as part of the training programme on urban and territorial planning. The collection was produced within the University Architecture Classroom (Aula Universitaria de Arquitectura), organised by the College of Architects and the University of Cádiz, and was published as part of the Lifelong Learning Courses conducted in this context.

The manuals stand out for their practical orientation, technical rigor, and alignment with major normative and strategic sustainability frameworks, such as the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the Spanish Urban Agenda of 2019, and the Andalusian Urban Agenda. Their use as reference texts in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at schools of architecture in Seville, Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza demonstrates their academic and professional impact.

The Andalusian Urban Planning Awards, now in their sixth edition, have been adapted for the first time to reflect the principles outlined in the new Andalusian Law on Sustainability of the Territory (LISTA). In the words of the Minister of Development, Rocío Díaz, these awards “demonstrate the significance of urban planning in our daily lives” and honour initiatives “committed to a more sustainable territorial model and to the wellbeing of citizens.
