Poetry and research against stereotypes open the first session of the In-EMHis 2025 series at the University of Cádiz

Writer Ana Rossetti closes the opening session of the In-EMHis 2025 series with a poetry reading at the Constitución 1812 Building

The University of Cádiz inaugurated this Wednesday the In-EMHis 2025 Conference Series, organised by the Research Institute for Hispanic World Studies (In-EMHis), with an academic programme that will run through October and November at the Constitución 1812 Building and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The initiative aims to disseminate and promote the research lines developed by the Institute’s units through meetings, round tables and academic activities open to both the university community and the general public. In particular, it seeks to highlight the work of the Institute’s emerging researchers.

The first session, held in the Lequerica Room at the Constitución 1812 Building, was titled “Andalusia in linguistic and literary research”, and was organised by the Unit for Literary, Linguistic and Cultural Studies from the Enlightenment to the Contemporary Age (UELLCIC). The event was introduced by the director of the Institute, Marieta Cantos, and the academic secretary, María Isabel Morales, who also moderated the first round table.

The session addressed key issues related to prejudices and stereotypes linked to Andalusian identity, with contributions from researchers Juan Pedro Martín, Teresa Bastardín, Daniel Muñoz, and Beatriz Sánchez Hita. The panel explored how the Andalusian stereotype was constructed even before costumbrista literature, how Andalusian identity has been associated with the Roma (gitano) imaginary, and examined the criteria behind the inclusion of specific Andalusian words used to portray regional speech.

This was followed by a panel of young researchers, who presented ongoing work on topics such as female discourse in 19th-century press, the Gaditanian ballad tradition, popular literature, the writings of Ana María Matute, and Andalusian cultural magazines from the 19th century.

The morning continued with a poster session and concluded with an encounter with writer Ana Rossetti. She was introduced by José Jurado, Professor of Spanish Literature, who offered a brief profile of the author and a reflection on her literary trajectory. Rossetti shared personal anecdotes that offered insight into the emotional depth and context of the verses she later read aloud to the audience.

Programme

The In-EMHis 2025 Conference Series will continue in November with new sessions organised by other research units within the Institute. The Specialised Unit in Liberalism and Democracy (UELDE) will hold, from 12 to 14 November, the international conference “Along the frontiers: Transfers and Exchanges in the Borderlands”, alongside the Liberalism and Democracy Sessions, which will take place in the Lecture Hall and Multipurpose Room of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

In addition, on 24 and 25 November, the Unit for Globalisation, Modernisation and Heritage Studies (UEGMP) will host the sessions “Maoism in Spain: A Global History”, focused on analysing the international connections of contemporary political movements.
