“Of course it had to be women”: an Equality campaign to break stereotypes and highlight their work 26 January 2026
The initiative uses irony and the graphic art of illustrator María Gómez and will be distributed through tote bags among the university community
The University of Cádiz, through its Office for Equality, has launched the campaign Of course it had to be women, an awareness-raising initiative that uses irony and graphic design as communication tools to highlight the work carried out by this unit within the institution.
The tote bag features an original illustration by artist María Gómez, focusing on women in a wide range of academic and professional fields. The image does not merely aim to represent them, but to give them the visibility that social dynamics often deny or limit. It is accompanied by the message Of course it had to be women, a phrase loaded with irony that seeks to engage the university community and reframe an expression traditionally associated with sexism, encouraging reflection on gender stereotypes.
From the Office for Equality, headed by Paqui Bernal, it is emphasized that the main objective of this initiative is to bring the unit closer to people. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the resources, programmes, and lines of action available to the entire university community, making it easier for anyone to know where to turn if they need support.
In addition, the campaign seeks to recognize and give visibility to the women who work and study at the University of Cádiz, highlighting the value of their daily contribution. The tote bags will be present at institutional events and on key dates, serving as a communication tool on milestones such as the upcoming 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Through this initiative, the University of Cádiz reaffirms its commitment to promoting genuine equality, opting for approachable communication strategies that connect with the university community both on and off campus.
