More than One Hundred UCA Women Researchers Included in the National CSIC Ranking of Scientists

The University of Cádiz has 107 women researchers featured in the 2026 edition of the list, with a strong presence of full professors, associate professors and research staff from different scientific fields

The University of Cádiz has strengthened its position in the national ranking of women researchers prepared by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Institute of Public Goods and Policies of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). This classification recognises Spanish and international women scientists affiliated with Spanish institutions who have the greatest research impact on open academic platforms such as Google Scholar, ORCID and OpenAlex.

According to the analysis carried out from the April 2026 edition, a total of 107 researchers linked to UCA appear in this national ranking, a figure that highlights the consolidation and visibility of the research conducted by women at the University of Cádiz.

In this ranking, UCA particularly stands out for the breadth and diversity of the profiles represented, with researchers from all stages of the academic and scientific career path, ranging from full professors and associate professors to postdoctoral researchers and specialised technical staff.

Among the most relevant data is the presence of 32 university full professors, representing nearly 30% of the total number of UCA researchers included in the ranking. In addition, associate professors make up the largest group, with 42 researchers, reflecting a strong research base and significant generational renewal within the institution.

The analysis also identifies María Magdalena Cuenca, from the field of Physical and Sports Education and INIBICA (Biomedical Research and Innovation Institute of the Province of Cádiz), as the highest-ranked researcher at the University of Cádiz. She holds position 921 in the national ranking and has an H-index of 50 on Google Scholar.

Other leading researchers include Mónica García-Alloza, from the field of Physiology; Esther María Berrocoso, from the Department of Neuroscience; Rosa María Varela, from Organic Chemistry; and Elena Fernández, from the Department of Statistics and Operations Research. All of them are ranked among the leading researchers nationwide and belong to the group of UCA full professors.

The ranking also highlights particularly noteworthy cases within the University’s research ecosystem. Among them is Professor Ana Belén Muñoz, from Neuroscience, who appears as the UCA scientist with the highest absolute number of accumulated citations, exceeding 10,400 academic references.

The ranking prepared by CSIC aims to increase the visibility of women researchers through the use of open science infrastructures and public academic identification systems. To achieve this, it uses bibliometric indicators such as the H-index and the number of citations obtained through Google Scholar and OpenAlex, taking as a reference public profiles correctly linked to ORCID.

The results of this work show that the University of Cádiz has a consolidated critical mass of women researchers, with scientific leadership across different fields of knowledge and significant representation in highly competitive areas such as health sciences, chemistry, and marine and environmental sciences.
