Master’s Degree in Gender Studies, Identities and Citizenship Celebrates 20 Years at UCA

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities hosts a commemorative event bringing together students, academics and alumni to reflect on the history and development of the programme.

The University of Cádiz celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Master’s Degree in Gender Studies, Identities and Citizenship on Wednesday. Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the programme marks two decades of academic activity this year. The commemorative event, organised in collaboration with the Faculty Dean’s Office and the University’s Directorate-General for Equality, brought together academic staff, current students and alumni to share memories, recognise the work carried out over the years and reflect on the continued relevance of a programme that has become firmly established within the University’s postgraduate portfolio.

The celebration began in the Faculty’s Assembly Hall with a session dedicated to revisiting the programme’s history through the testimonies of former students. Alumni shared both academic and personal experiences linked to a degree that has contributed to the advancement of gender studies from a wide range of disciplinary and professional perspectives.

One of the most significant moments of the event was the tribute paid to the teaching staff whose commitment has ensured the continuity and consolidation of the programme over the past twenty years. Particular recognition was given to Professors Gloria Espigado and Asunción Aragón, who have held leadership and coordination roles and have played a decisive part in the academic development and growth of the Master’s programme since its inception.

The anniversary also provided an opportunity to highlight the academic and human community that has developed around the programme over two decades. Messages of congratulations and appreciation from current students and alumni reflected the impact that the degree has had both within the University and on the professional and personal trajectories of those who have completed it.

The programme continued with the lecture Humour, Feminism and Academia, delivered by Susana Ginesta, a graduate of the Master’s programme, holder of a PhD from the University of Cádiz and member of Cádiz’s celebrated carnival tradition as a chirigotera. Accompanied by the group Cadiwoman, Ginesta offered an engaging presentation that combined humour, critical reflection and advocacy while addressing issues related to feminism and gender studies from an accessible and thought-provoking perspective.

The event concluded with the opening of the exhibition 20 Images – 20 Years of the Master’s Degree in Gender Studies, Identities and Citizenship, displayed in the central hall of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The exhibition presents a visual journey through the programme’s history, featuring a selection of photographs that capture different stages of its development and highlight some of the activities, projects and individuals that have shaped its evolution over the past two decades.

Through this anniversary celebration, the University of Cádiz recognised the contribution of the Master’s Degree in Gender Studies, Identities and Citizenship to teaching, research and social engagement, reaffirming its commitment to equality, critical thinking and interdisciplinary academic development.
