The institution, affiliated with the Universidad de Cádiz, received the distinction at a ceremony attended by the Vice-Rector and the Director of the Secretariat for Coordination of the Bay of Algeciras Campus.

The Virgen de Europa Teacher Training College, affiliated with the Universidad de Cádiz, received the Gold Medal of La Línea de la Concepción this past weekend, an award granted by the City Council on the occasion of the institution’s 50th anniversary. The Vice-Rector of the Bay of Algeciras Campus, María Luz Martín, and the Director of the Secretariat for Coordination, Marusa Arias, represented the University of Cádiz at the ceremony, which was held at the town’s Conference Centre.

The City’s Gold Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the City Council, recognises the history and social commitment of the Virgen de Europa University Centre, highlighting its educational work and its strong involvement in the academic and cultural life of La Línea de la Concepción. The Episcopal Vicar of the Campo de Gibraltar, Juan José Marina Janeiro, and the Director of the centre, Rosa Garay, were responsible for receiving the award on behalf of the institution.

The institutional ceremony also served to honour other local individuals and organisations. In the individual category, José Gallego Segundo was named Favourite Son of the City in recognition of his artistic career and his close ties to the traditions of La Línea. Artist Sylvain Marc received the Tres Gracias Award, acknowledging his international profile and academic achievements.

Social and environmental commitment was also highlighted during the ceremony. Rosa Valcayo Andrés was honoured with a special mention for her pioneering work in support of people affected by oncological diseases through the organisation Apron. The Evangelical Church Fuente de Paz, represented by Pastor David Bianchi, was recognised for promoting values of coexistence and spiritual support, while the association Los Locos del Parque, represented by its president Eladio Bracho, was distinguished for its efforts in protecting local flora and fauna.

The tribute to the city’s cultural memory concluded with the dedication of the Paseo de Los Rocking Boys, in honour of the pioneering local rock and roll band, recognising its influence on different generations and its contribution to the artistic development of La Línea de la Concepción.
