The Director of INMAR and General Coordinator of CEI·MAR receives the award in ‘Marine Science and Environmental Technologies’ at the ceremony held in Córdoba

Carmen Garrido, Professor at the University of Cádiz, Director of the University Institute for Marine Research (INMAR) and General Coordinator of the International Campus of Excellence of the Sea (CEI·MAR), has been honoured at the 1st Talent Woman Andalucía Awards 2025 in the category of Marine Science and Environmental Technologies.

The awards ceremony took place at the José Luis García-Palacios Cultural Centre in Córdoba, where seven women and one association were recognised as leading figures in science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship in Andalusia. The awards are promoted by the Andalusian Digital Agency (ADA) in collaboration with Talent Woman/Talent Land and the Córdoba City Council, with the aim of highlighting female talent in STEAM fields and encouraging scientific and technological vocations among new generations.

For the University of Cádiz, this distinction represents a source of particular pride and a recognition of the rigour and dedication with which Carmen Garrido has developed her academic and scientific career.

A career closely linked to marine and environmental research

Carmen Garrido is Professor of Environmental Technologies at the University of Cádiz and was appointed Director of INMAR in 2024, a role she combines with her responsibilities as General Coordinator of CEI·MAR.

She holds a degree in Marine Sciences and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cádiz. Her research activity focuses on areas such as environmental phycotechnology, the development of environmental quality criteria based on ecotoxicological and chemical results, and the use of microalgae for water treatment and purification applications.

Other distinctions in this first edition

In addition to the recognition awarded to Carmen Garrido, the 1st Talent Woman Andalucía Awards 2025 also honoured other outstanding professionals and initiatives across several categories. In Engineering, technological education and STEAM vocations, the award went to Marta López Martos; in Emerging technologies for inclusion and wellbeing, to María Jesús Garrido; in Microbiology and global health challenges, to Hikmate Abriouel; and in Public health, epidemiology and clinical research, to María José Sánchez, from Granada.

The distinction in Agri-food industry, food quality and territory was awarded to Brígida Jiménez, while the category of Digital innovation in the creative industries recognised Raquel Pérez and Mariana Flink. Finally, in the category of Promoting female STEAM entrepreneurship (investment and ecosystem), the award went to WA4STEAM, an association of women business angels.
