 Elegida mejor guitarrista del mundo en la 67th Annual Critics Poll de la prestigiosa publicación DownBeat – por delante de grandes del instrumento como Bill Frisell, John Scofield o Pat Metheny -, Mary Halvorson es uno de los nombres más cotizados del jazz contemporáneo. Descrita como “un talento singular” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), “la improvisadora menos predecible de Nueva York” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “una de las guitarristas más emocionantes y originales del jazz… o de lo contrario “(Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), y “una de los líderes de banda más formidables de la actualidad “(Francis Davis, Village Voice), Halvorson ha lanzado una serie de álbumes aclamados por la crítica en el sello Firehouse 12: “Dragon’s Head” (2008), su debut en trío con el bajista John Hébert y el baterista Ches Smith,  “Saturn Sings” (2010) y “Bending Bridges” (2012) expandiendo el grupo a quinteto con el añadido del trompetista Jonathan Finlayson y el saxofonista Jon Jonbabagon; en un septeto con la saxofonista tenor Ingrid Laubrock y el trombonista Jacob Garchik en “Illusionary Sea” (2014), y finalmente en un octeto con la guitarrista Susan Alcorn en “Away With You” (2016). Además de suscribir alianzas con otros guitarristas francotiradores como Elliott Sharp, Nels Cline o Marc Ribot, el trompetista Peter Evans o el proyecto Thumbscrew, Halvorson también lanzó la grabación en solitario “Meltframe” (2015), y el proyecto “Code Girl” (2018), un fascinante conjunto con la vocalista Amirtha Kidambi (cantando las propias letras de Halvorson), el trompetista Adam O’Farrill, el saxofonista y vocalista María Grand, el bajista Michael Formanek y el baterista Tomas Fujiwara. Un formidable proyecto que describe el jazz del futuro y que traspasa con creces los límites del género.  Comisionado por The Jazz Gallery, “Code Girl” supone la última constatación de un impulso creativo que no atiende a patrones y que prefiere expresarse sin pautas.
